When the persecution first began in 1999, foreign press was not familiar with the Falun Gong and many newspapers based their reports primarily on information from the Party’s state-run media. Western media coverage of the Falun Gong in China since 2001 has been minimal to non-existent due to a variety of factors, including Communist Party obstruction, editorial preferences, self-censorship for fear of reprisals (see: Out of the Media Spotlight).
The exceptions have been a handful of remarkable journalists whose courageous investigative reports on the Falun Gong have historically contributed to documenting and revealing the persecution to the rest of the world.
