When the persecution first began in 1999, foreign press was not familiar with the Falun Gong and many newspapers based their reports primarily on information from the Party’s state-run media. Western media coverage of the Falun Gong in China since 2001 has been minimal to non-existent due to a variety of factors, including Communist Party obstruction, editorial preferences, self-censorship for fear of reprisals (see: Out of the Media Spotlight). 

The exceptions have been a handful of remarkable journalists whose courageous investigative reports on the Falun Gong have historically contributed to documenting and revealing the persecution to the rest of the world. 

Below are some of the most notable examples of, unfortunately, the currently very few in-depth articles about the Falun Gong in China. Though many are out of date, these articles leave few ambiguities about the scope and severity of the campaign:
